1848 was the year that gold was discovered in California at Sutter's Mill.
But all of the CIR, CIO, CMR, and CMO varieties, regardless of date,
were likely struck circa-1915,
perhaps to commemorate the Panama-Pacific International Exposition held
in San Francisco that year.
