How others will see it. Most viewers will notice this is a low budget movie that has the feel of a play. The two male leads are far from sympathetic, and Chad's sense of humor doesn't translate well. I don't think that many people will enjoy this film, unless they have an agenda against the male ego that this movie helps to reinforce.
How I felt about it. Are men overwhelming jerks? Or maybe it's just Chad who is a jerk. But, he is the winner in the movie. He gets the last laugh on everybody. This part of the movie rang true, the outcome of relationships. The false front stud wins the girl, then discards her. The nebbish flounders to get the girl, who rejects him once he gets too close. The pecking order has been established, and the only person who enjoys it is the person who is on top.
Bu what work Chad has to go through to get his jollies. Lies, stories, cons, speeches, all must be an end to themselves to be worth the effort. Or, perhaps, he is such an egotist that he has to hear the sound of his own voice. In any event, he is the poster child for overweening male ego and smugness.
The only emotion delivered by the film, then, is to frustrate the viewer, unless you want to make a drinking game out of it. One drink when Chad tells a lie, two drinks when he lands an insult.
The irony is that Chad has no real emotions, save for a sociopathic impulse to crush someone else's spirit. Yet he is constantly projecting. Meanwhile, Howard lacks the confidence, at least until he is desperate, to make his own feelings clear. He has legitimate feelings, unlike Chad. But no one is interested in Howard's feelings. It's a cruel world.
One scene could easily have been left on the cutting room floor, because it is inconsequential to the story. But I'm glad it was included. It shows Chad at his worst. He corrals an awkward male intern into his office, closes the door, and cajoles the guy into showing him his organ, to prove to Chad that he does indeed have the balls to be a young shark executive. Congratulations.
Such a scene could only exist in a movie written by someone not quite familiar with the working world. Hostile workplace environment, sexual harrassment, lawsuit, termination. Can the reward be worth the risk?
